The Assassination of George Brown

A recent article from our friends at the Torontoist details the assassination of George Brown, a Father of Confederation and original Editor of The Globe, by disgruntled former employee George Bennett.

Bennett was executed at the Don Jail on July 23, 1880. Upon the gallows he uttered the following:

He has gone to his death through an oversight on my part. It was a foolish thing for me to have drawn the revolver, but I was in liquor or I would have never done it. I could not control the event. I went there purely on a matter of business and my business was very simple and very plain. The result was as it was. I am prepared to die.

Welcome to our new website to promote our upcoming film, The Hangman’s Graveyard, and our collaborative efforts with Archaeological Services Inc.

Hangman’s Graveyard is a tale of crime and punishment, of murderers and villains, and a modern day investigation to uncover and identify the remains of individuals buried in the Murderer’s Graveyard which lies beneath a parking lot behind Toronto’s notorious Don Jail.
